My challenge is to leave a comment on the next fanwork you consume. Comments are so appreciated by fanwork creators. They let us know what you enjoyed and how we made you feel with our ideas and hard work. If you've never left a comment before, don't be shy, people love to get them. Do it anonymously if you want to.

I've left a couple of comments today on some fics that I read. They're older fics so the writer might not even look at them any more but I hope they do.

Oh how I love tropes. There's something comforting about a familiar predicament but with another writer's slant on it.

I'm a sucker for a hypothermia fic. It's a valid excuse for two people who pine from afar to get up close and personal, and all it takes is for one person to be a little brave and make a move or, you know, stuttering breaths and blown pupils and awkward boners. You can only remain oblivious for so long when pressed up against someone in the cold.

h/c and angst are things I love to read and seek out when I'm in the mood. Everything from a misunderstanding gotten out of hand to major physical harm (as long as there's some kind of resolution, the comfort is important). I like that fanfiction can take these things to their extremes in a way that canon usually can't, and the rollercoaster of emotions is so satisfyingly wild.

There are a couple of AUs that I adore; Post-Apocalyptic (I love apocalyptic media in general so combining it with my fandoms is awesome), Coffee Shop (serisously, coffee beans and my OTP? Match made in heaven!) and Accidental Marriage (I just finished one for the [community profile] romancingmcshep fest).

I've just finished my [community profile] romancingmcshep fic (and I'm in the middle of writing two Rodney Whump fics) so I'm gonna call this one done even though I can't show anything yet. I've been steadily writing fics since I posted my first one last year, pretty much every day I do some writing. Some days are more productive than others, but I'm enjoying it just the same.

I'm back at work, and as a nursing assistant my entire job is nothing but acts of kindness. Today I comforted a man who just lost his wife, and performed the last offices on her. There's something kinda humbling about taking care of the deceased. There's a custom in Scotland, and I'm sure other places in the world, where you open the window to let the departed's soul out. I'm not one to believe in a soul, but I do it anyway because you can't always know the beliefs of your patients.

My wife is working nights for the next six nights and to take care of her I will make her something nice for dinner as often as I can. Night shift is difficult just by virtue of staying awake when your body is telling you to sleep. I'll miss her like heck though.

There are a variety of resources i use when I'm writing fics. Here are my top 5.

1.
SGCommand the Stargate fandom wiki is useful for obvious reasons, but did you know it also has episode transcripts? These are so useful when you want to double check canon dialogue.

2. Do you like sound when you're writing, but find music too distracting? Ambient Mixer has audio that will play in the background but not take your attention away from your muse. It has everything from the Slytherin Commonroom to Croft Manor. If you're in the mood for writing some McShep, I made a Rodney's Lab mix to set the scene.

3. Thesaurus.com is useful for when you just can't get away with using a particular word again and need an alternative, or when a word is on the tip of your tongue and you don't want to spend the whole evening chasing it.

4. If you need to edit some HTML or create a working link, WordHTML is a good place to start.

5. Fantasy Name Generators is useful if you need to create a name for an OC or an original planet or race. You probably won't generate the perfect name to use, but you will get some pointers and inspiration. There are generators for just about any topic you can think of.

One of the things I really enjoy doing is crossovers, setting a McShep love story against the backdrop of an indie video game. I've posted two crossover fics: (Subnautica and The Long Dark), and I have a rough plan of another (Firewatch). I probably wouldn't have posted them online if I hadn't read [personal profile] respoftw's A Region of Space, an SGA crossover with The Cube (one of my favourite David Hewlett films). It plunges John, Rodney, Teyla and Ronon into the cube and roughly follows the film's plot. It's epic and creepy and totally captures the essence of the film while flipping it on its head, instead of the "every man for himself" feel of the film it focusses on team dynamics and how that aids their survival. All of respoftw's fics are excellent, but this work in particular inspired me greatly to get my own crossover ideas written and shared. She's one of the first fanfic writers that I got into and subscribed to cause I know whatever she writes I'm going to enjoy.

Picking my forever fandom is easy for me because I only have a couple. I'm not one to jump from fandom to fandom, I tend to get my claws into one thing and hang on for a long time. My oldest fandom is HP, I got into that not long after book one was published, but it's not my forever fandom. That honour goes to Stargate Atlantis.

I'm late to the SGA fandom. I skipped it when it first aired cause life was too busy to get into another show and I was heavily into SG1 so it got put off and put off and forgotten about. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I sat down and watched it and I was hooked from episode 1. I like so much about it, the premise (I love long lost colony sotries, Voyager was my favourite of the Treks), the big bads (their aesthetic appeals to my inner goth, and seriously, no matter how silly they look the thought of being an alien's food is terrifying), the script is tight and fantastic and the visuals are stunning. But the biggest and most important thing that I love about SGA are the characters. Like SG1, it's easy to love them and follow them from world to world, problem to solution. Especially John (the "I'd do anything for any one of you" military leader, thrust into leadership unexpectedly and walking the line between the military and his own heart) and Rodney (the brilliant but ascerbic scientist, who went from a misogynistic jerk in SG1 to a loveable but flawed grouch in SGA). No one but David Hewlett could have taken that guest character and made him a firm fan favourite.

I like it even more than SG1 and I'm gutted I missed out on the early fandom days, but I was thrilled to find out that people still talked about it and made fanworks, even ten years after it's over. Discovering the world of SGA fanfiction was like all my christmasses come at once (especially when I clocked onto the McShep vibes), and discovering people were still writing them was like adding in all my birthdays. I read fics for a couple of hours every day and write bits of my own fics whenever I can. It's the first fandom I've ever posted a fic in, and I can totally see me still doing this an twenty years time.

This challenge is both a dream (in that I have lots of recs) and a nightmare (in that I have...lots of recs). So what I'm going to do is rec a maximum of one fic per writer to keep it from becoming an endless list. This list isn't in any particular order and it is absolutely not exhaustive (my bookmarks on AO3 runs to 9 pages so far). If I was to write the list again tomorrow it would have seven completely different fics. Most of these are McShep cause that's my jam.

Choice (3816 words) by esteefee
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Carson Beckett, Teyla Emmagan
Additional Tags: Established Relationship, Mpreg, Abortion, Hurt/Comfort, Angst, Body Horror
Summary: This is not your Pegasus miracle.

Why I Rec This: This isn't your usual mpreg fic. Never have I ever read an account of abortion (either IRL or in fiction) that articulates the issues and feelings surrounding an unwanted and unexpected pregnancy so beautifully. It really highlights the complexity and conflict of the emotions around it. [personal profile] esteefee is an excellent fic writer but this fic is my all time fave.

Pegasus Non-Verbal (6351 words) by igrab
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: John Sheppard, Rodney McKay, Teyla Emmagan, Ronon Dex
Additional Tags: Disabled Character, Muteness
Summary: John always gets a little thrill when he sees Rodney sign at him across the room, casually dissing people literally standing next to him and John is the only one who knows.

Why I Rec This: Rodney is such a verbal character that taking him and making him non-verbal is such a challenge, but igrab really rises to it. He's still verbiose and articulate, just in a different way and it feels so damn real.

Sleeping Arrangements (3877 words) by Persiflager
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan
Additional Tags: Platonic Cuddling, Post-Coital Cuddling, Friendship, Friends to Lovers
Summary: “We didn’t fuck,” said Rodney from underneath the Ancient console he was taking to pieces. “Pass me the big spanner.”

Why I Rec This: Oblivious and Jealous John wrapped in physically affectionate Ronon and Rodney. This an absolute joy to read. Persiflager is so damn good at short and sweet.

The Golden Rule (3271 words) by respoftw
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Evan Lorne, Miko Kusanagi, Todd (Stargate Atlantis)
Additional Tags: Implied Relationships, Protective John, Kidnapping, Allergies, Sacrifice, POV Outsider, Spoilers for Episode: s04e09 Millers Crossing
Series: Part 1 of Tumblr Prompts - McShep edition
Summary: Atlantis has one golden rule: Do not, under any circumstances, let anything bad happen to McKay

Why I Rec This: Okay, so... [personal profile] respoftw is well known for Rodney Whump, and that's one of my favourite things in the world, but if pressed (really hard) to pick a favourite of her fics I always come back to this one. Do not, under any circumstances, let anything happen to McKay. It's not a stretch to see this being canon. It's a bunch of short stories, shared in hushed whispers amongst the Atlantis personnel, of times that rule has been broken and how John reponds to that. Such a good read.

A Farm in Iowa (11171 words) by sheafrotherdon
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe, Kid Fic
Series: Part 1 of A Farm in Iowa 'Verse
Summary: John inherits a farm, Rodney ends up entirely out of his element, and there is much ado about baseball. Completely AU

Why I Rec This: [personal profile] sheafrotherdon combines McShep and Mills and Boon (Harlequin if you're in North America) and it's sappy and romantic and wonderful. There's an entire 'verse of this and I read it every couple of months from start to finish.

Baby, I'm Howlin' For You (19703 words) by popkin16
Chapters: 4/?
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Ronon Dex, Radek Zelenka, Teyla Emmagen
Additional Tags: Alternate Universe - Werewolves Are Known, First Time, Romance, Angst
Summary:

Lone wolf Rodney McKay only has three rules:
• Never take a contracting job that lasts longer than 4 months
• Avoid the local pack
• Don't get comfortable.

This was supposed to be a job like any other. But Rodney hadn't known to factor in John Sheppard.

Why I Rec This: this is a WIP. [personal profile] popkin16 is one of my favourite writers, as well as being the most knowledgeable SGA person I've ever talked to. I'm not particularly into werewolf fics but I love the story of this one and the characters are spot on. It's my favourite of all of her works.

The Intentions of Others (29083 words) by BunnyBopper
Chapters: 8/8
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Remus Lupin/Severus Snape
Characters: Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, Albus Dumbledore, Aurora Sinistra, Filius Flitwick, Pomona Sprout, Rolanda Hooch, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley
Additional Tags: Book 3: Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Attempt at Humor, POV Severus Snape, Explicit Sexual Content, Sexual Tension, Porn with Feelings, Getting Together, Comedy, Humor, Eventual Romance, Porn With Plot, First Times
Summary:

Severus Snape knows Lupin is hiding something, but he can be guilty of jumping to conclusions.

Why I Rec This: Okay, so disclosure, BunnyBopper is my wife. She started writing fanfics last year, not long after me, and this was the first fic she did. It's hot and funny, and the only non-McShep fic in my list. It got me into Snupin in a big way. Snape was one of the first characters I got into fandom wise, and until I read this I had a hard time shipping him with anyone after the great Sirius-is-an-asshole reveal, but this brought me back into a Snape ship fast and hard.

I'm gonna go down the "Promote Yourself" route and rec three of my fics that I think are good and people would enjoy reading.

The Kiss (1174 words) by LogicGunn
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Additional Tags: First Kiss, Cutesy, Absent-minded Kissing, Fluff
Summary:John is bored.

Why you should read this: I wrote this for [personal profile] popkin16 who asked for "some absent minded McShep kisses" on Tumblr. It was my first gift to someone, and it's 100% adorable fluff that will cheer you up if you need it.

Milk and Honey (4729 words) by LogicGunn
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Rating: Mature
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Hypothermia, Weather, First Kiss, First Time, Moody!John
Summary: “I don’t know how they do it in the United States Air Force, but in Canada if someone can’t keep their core temperature up, we share body heat. Scoot up Colonel.”

Why you should read this: It's literally the best thing I've ever written. If you like hypothermia trope fics, you'll love this. I was freezing cold when I wrote it and it shows. This was also a gift, for amycooper/cerulean-beekeeper. I guess my best work is when I have someone else in mind?

The Long Dark (44871 words) by LogicGunn
Chapters: 12/12
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis, The Long Dark (Video Game)
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Rape/Non-Con
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard, Todd the Wraith (Stargate)
Additional Tags: Post-Apocalyptic, Alternate Universe, Mention of War Crimes, Mention of Childhood Neglect, Hunting, Animal Death, Hypothermia, PTSD, Fluff and Angst, Slow Burn, Minor Character Death, Some Frozen Bodies, one scene where John throws a chair at a wall cause he just can't get a grip, alternating pov, So much huddling for warmth and hugging, I know the tags are dark but the fic is 90 percent fluff I swear, Did I mention fluff?, Stalking
Series: Part 1 of The Long Dark
Summary: John and Rodney crash land on a remote island in Northern Canada. Based on The Long Dark by Hinterland Games, but you absolutely do not need to have played the game to read this fic. M rating is for multiple dark themes but I promise it's mostly just the boys falling in love and being adorable (they just talk a bit about difficult pasts events). Please note the warning: there's a very brief attempted non-con attack involving a secondary character and one of the boys in chapter 8, but it's not graphic or gratuitous. If you want any specifics before reading please feel free to message me on Tumblr.

Why you should read this: I think this might be the world's first fluffy post apocalyptic McShep fic. 12 chapters of the boys falling in love in a harsh place and overcoming the challenges of life without other people or technology. I've gotten better with each fic I've written, and this is the fic I'm most proud of. I'm still writing little snippets in this AU, moments that come after the fic ends or that I couldn't fit into the fic at the time.

Actually, I'm going to rec one more.

Subnautica (1968 words) by LogicGunn
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Stargate Atlantis, Subnautica (Video Game)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: Major Character Death
Relationships: Rodney McKay/John Sheppard
Characters: Rodney McKay, John Sheppard
Additional Tags: Subnautica
Summary: The deep space carrier Aurora went missing on a routine supply run to an outpost on P7X-824. No trace of the Aurora or it's crew was found. 35 years later, audio transmissions were picked up by a satellite on the edge of the Pegasus Galaxy. This document contains transcripts of the recoverable audio logs.

Why you should read this: This was an experimental fic for me, it's entirely dialogue. It's my least popular fic, which is no wonder with the MCD, but if you're not afraid of that you should give it a go. I think it's pretty good. Captures the boys pretty well.

Things that I wish existed in fandom:

1. A way to know if the people who don't leave kudos enjoyed your fic (seriously, did you like it, hate it, something in between?)

2. A comprehensive list of fandom terms (what the heck is the difference between a fest and a bang?)

3. A high res 1920x1080 McShep desktop wallpaper

4. A random fic generator that recs a fic to you based on you ticking boxes with what you're in the mood for

5. A beta reader sign up page

6. A Stargate Atlantis specific forum or hangout place

Today's challenge is to leave a comment to someone new or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with before and friend/follow them. I've only recently started using DW so I've been doing a lot of that over the past two weeks. Mostly I've been looking for people I've noticed elsewhere in fandom (like AO3 or Tumblr), people whose fics I've read, and people I've found through the [community profile] snowflake_challenge who are fans of Stargate. It's been nice checking out other people's corners on DW and getting to know things about them through the challenge. It's been even nicer to have other people friend me, I'm not very confident at social things.

I have one goal for the coming year: finish a fic without it turning into a fluff-fest.

I started posting fanfiction in June 2019. I've shared 14 works so far, and most of them have one thing in common - they're adorable. I love writing fluffy fics, but the thing is, even when I intend to write something dark and gritty it just turns into a fluff fest. My biggest work, The Long Dark, is a fluffy post-apocalyptic fic, despite the dark tags. Who knew that was even possible? I certainly didn't, but when I tried to write a dark and depressing first chapter it kept edging lighter until I just gave up and just wrote it how it came out. I love it for what it is, but this year, hopefully this month, I'm going to finish a BAMF!John, Whumped!Rodney fic. I've started it and so far so good. Fingers crossed I can keep it gritty and stop it turning into candyfloss.

On a more personal level, last year I was pretty unwell and had to take some time off work. I had my first day back yesterday and it went okay, so this year I'm hoping to get my life back on track. Maybe also go on a holiday with my wife. We've never been abroad together, even though we've been together for over seventeen years. That would be awesome.

I've literally just started using DW this year, so I've just started my first challenge - [community profile] snowflake_challenge, and my first ever fest - [community profile] romancingmcshep.

The snowflake challenge is exciting to me because it's new-user friendly. It gives me a chance to let people know things about me, and a chance to think about what I want to do with my DW account since I've never really had a blog before.

I'm particularly excited to do the Romancing McShep fest because I've never done a fest before either. I've only been posting fanfiction since the beginning of June 2019, so I'm kind of a  new writer, and this is the first fest to ping my radar. I'm a sucker for a happily ever so it's a good one to be a part of, and the other participants are such a lovely bunch of people.

I'm looking forward to finding new challenges.

My first ever fandoms were Harry Potter and The X Files. I had a near-obsession with Snape and Scully. I think they were the first fictional characters I ever related to, and I hit puberty a little early so...this was my desktop background for  years.
Mulder and Scully

I mean, what's not to love? I had "the Scully" haircut for a lot of my teens, red and blowdried in a flip. It suited me actually. :) My first username was FallenDeathEater, a nod to my interest in Snape.

HP stuck with me, the X Files got relegated to a storage box in my happy place. I've had fleeting interests in various things throughout the years, but nothing I read fanfiction of until a couple of years ago when I discovered Stargate Atlantis for the first time. I adored SG1, but when Atlantis came out there were some big life changes so I didn't make time or space for it and I skipped it completely. I couldn't tell you why I sat down and watched episode one, but I did, and episode one turned into season one, then suddenly I'd watched the whole damn show through and went back to the beginning again. I was hooked.

Rodney and John
I clocked onto the McShep vibes pretty quickly and shipped them hard. All those little moments between them drew me back to fanfiction for the first time in over a decade and what a big ship it must have been back in the day, over 12000 fics pairing Rodney and John on AO3, (compare that with 5700ish for Jackson and O'Neill, or 4300ish for O'Neill and Carter). It still ranks 34 in AO3's ship stats of 2019, and for a show that ended 12 years ago that's all kinds of impressive.

I soon discovered that the fandom was still active, a group of the nicest, most supportve fans you could ever meet, and, after much deliberation, started posting fics on AO3 for people to read. I'm in the UK so a lot of days I wake up to comments from people elsewhere in the world and it's such an amazing feeling to create something that other people enjoy.

My name is Wade, I'm LogicGunn on AO3 and Tumblr and a few other places. 33, She/Her.

I've lurked for a while in various fandoms all over the place (I started reading HP fanfiction in my early teens), but officially joined the SGA fandom last year when I started posting fics. 2019 was a bit of a difficult year for me personally, and I found I had a lot of empty time on my hands so I started writing more seriously than I had before and it's kind of exploded into something bigger than I expected which is totally awesome.

I'm here for the McShep but I respect your ships no matter what they are. At the moment I'm working my way chronologically through AO3's McShep fics (I'm on page 69 of 602 and growing) and I'm not skipping anything no matter the tags so that's a hell of a ride.

I live in Scotland with my wife and I'm a nursing assistant on a surgical ward. I have a BSc (Hons) in Biology and Math. Love coffee and eyeliner, piercings and tattoos and video games, and my first drafts always have too many commas in them.

I've never posted on DW before so this challenge is exciting.
