My Fannish History - Snowflake Challenge #2

My first ever fandoms were Harry Potter and The X Files. I had a near-obsession with Snape and Scully. I think they were the first fictional characters I ever related to, and I hit puberty a little early so...this was my desktop background for  years.
Mulder and Scully

I mean, what's not to love? I had "the Scully" haircut for a lot of my teens, red and blowdried in a flip. It suited me actually. :) My first username was FallenDeathEater, a nod to my interest in Snape.

HP stuck with me, the X Files got relegated to a storage box in my happy place. I've had fleeting interests in various things throughout the years, but nothing I read fanfiction of until a couple of years ago when I discovered Stargate Atlantis for the first time. I adored SG1, but when Atlantis came out there were some big life changes so I didn't make time or space for it and I skipped it completely. I couldn't tell you why I sat down and watched episode one, but I did, and episode one turned into season one, then suddenly I'd watched the whole damn show through and went back to the beginning again. I was hooked.

Rodney and John
I clocked onto the McShep vibes pretty quickly and shipped them hard. All those little moments between them drew me back to fanfiction for the first time in over a decade and what a big ship it must have been back in the day, over 12000 fics pairing Rodney and John on AO3, (compare that with 5700ish for Jackson and O'Neill, or 4300ish for O'Neill and Carter). It still ranks 34 in AO3's ship stats of 2019, and for a show that ended 12 years ago that's all kinds of impressive.

I soon discovered that the fandom was still active, a group of the nicest, most supportve fans you could ever meet, and, after much deliberation, started posting fics on AO3 for people to read. I'm in the UK so a lot of days I wake up to comments from people elsewhere in the world and it's such an amazing feeling to create something that other people enjoy.

That is a very nice image to be obsessed with, honestly. ;-)

I cannot express how happy I am that you are in the SGA fandom. Just imagine sparkly, jumping unicorns in a field of chocolate-flavored rainbow daisies. Or not.

Ah, X-Files! Fell in love with Mulder when I was 12 then rewatched in my 20s and realised I loved Scully!

That’s so awesome! My partner can’t stand SGA and it’s a constant source of disappointment to me, lol.

I know. There was a point early on in our relationship where we made each other watch our favourite films and he DIDN’T LIKE THE PRINCESS BRIDE!!

It very nearly ended there but luckily we have other things in common, lol.

I’m super jealous you get to share SGA with yours!

Scully was/is such a defining character. I feel like she was one of the first strongly independent and fighter female 90s characters -- or maybe it just feels like that to me? Not counting Xena and Buffy of course ;) But, man, I shipped Mulder/Scully like fire. <3

And, I agree with you on the McShep/Atlantis rewatch. Both SG-1 and SGA have such well written and acted pilots its hard not to just keep watching, and the chemistry between Sheppard and McKay was palpable. I feel like they are such an easy pairing to slip back into ... like if you want to write again, they are very easy to play with.

Honestly the show wasn't the same the seasons she wasn't in it. She was a tiny little force de resistance. Although I did enjoy Krycek, he was no Scully. For a long brief time I wanted to be a forensic pathologist like Scully, just the whole school thing got in the way, LOL.

And, I agree with the SGA dialogue. Certain characters are easy to write for - like they are predictable without being predictable, if that makes sense. And both SG-1 and SGA have just so many potentials and, the best part, you can redo the same scenario a dozen different ways.

I still very much love The X-Files
